The highlight of this program was the March 23rd Platelet Donor Gala. All donors who made six or more platelet donations in 2006 were invited to this special recognition event at the Drexelbrook Banquet Facility in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania.

Approximately 500 donors, guest and staff volunteers enjoyed a wonderful evening focused entirely on thanking our donors for their contribution. A lively cocktail hour was followed by a delicious dinner and a lavish dessert bar. Entertainment was provided by the Eddie Bruce band, with the dance floor packed for most of the night.

Donors and their guest were entered to win several raffle prizes ranging from movie tickets to a Bed and Breakfast gift certificate. A photo area was available for guest to have their picture taken with Buddy Blood Drop. Photos from the event are available for viewing at www.digiproofs.com with the password “blood.”

The highlight for many donors was meeting the appointment schedulers, the unseen voices who are the backbone of the platelet program.

Platelets are a blood component that aid in clotting and are vital in helping patients with leukemia and other cancers. Platelet donations utilize apheresis technology, separating the blood and retaining the platelets while returning the other blood components to the donor. A platelet donation usually last at least ninety minutes, and can be made every two weeks up to twenty-four times a year.
