Sickle Cell Essay Scholarship Competition |

The American Red Cross Penn-Jersey Blood Services Region is pleased to announce an annual essay competition focused on increasing awareness for the need of more blood donors in order to support the blood transfusions for patients managing Sickle Cell Disease.
The student whose essay is judged the winning entry will be awarded a $1000 scholarship. The winner will be invited to attend the American Red Cross, Penn-Jersey Region Annual Meeting on Thursday, June 18, 2009 to receive the award.
Essay Topic
Background: Sickle Cell Disease is a genetic blood disorder that creates abnormally shaped red blood cells. In the United States, ninety percent of those affected by sickle cell disease are from the Black community. It has been proven that routine blood transfusuions from healthy blood donors can help prevent some of the complications from the disease. The Sickle Cell Donor Program recruits blood donors from the same racial background as those affected by the disease.
